"Why are you in college at such a young age?" I asked later. She jokinglyreplied, " I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple ofchildren, and then retire and travel."
"No seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivatedher to betaking on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a collegeeducation and now I'm getting one!" she told me.
We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we wouldleave class together and tolk nonstop. I was always listening to this "timemachine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to make a speech to our footballteam. I'll never forget what she taught us. As she began to deliverher preparedspeech, she dropped her note card on the floor. A little embarrassed she simplysaid, "I'm sorry. This whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back inorder so let me just tell you what I know." As we laughed she cleared her throatand began:" We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because westop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, andachieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got tohave a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walkingaround who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference betweengrowing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed forone full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old.Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talentor ability. The idea is togrow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. Theelderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but
rather for things we didnot do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets."
At the year's end Rose finished the college degree. One week
aftergraduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college studentsattended her funeral to honorthe wonderful woman who taught by example that it'snever too late to be all you can possibly be.

A lot or TV and radio programs about Christmas are on. Meanwhile the Spring Festival is less appealing to youngsters. Thus some people wonder whether Christmas will replace the Spring Festival. This worry is fairly unnecessary. Why ? One reason lies that Christmas only affects Christians，college students and joint-venture workers. Another reason is that Christmas is mostly celebrated in cities. Few people in countryside show extreme interest in this exotic festival. By contrast，the Spring Festival is the most influential traditional festival in every family.
I think，it is natural that with increasing exchanges with the West，a lot of Western holidays have been gradually introduced into China. For us Chinese we should never neglect or even discard our own traditional festivals. For centuries Chinese have observed this traditional holiday to welcome the beginning of a new year. And we will treasure the Spring Festival forever.

Ladies and gentlemen,We engineering students take it for granted that technology is changing incredibly fast. We are thinking nervously and seriously whether our colleges are failing to provide a foundation in the skills currently needed in industry. Take my major telecommunications for example. Scientists say that 21st century is a biomedical time, not an electrical time. But without the help of electronic data processing and transformation, biomedical technology alone cannot go too far. Funny enough, the word biomedical itself is just a combination of two disciplines. So the interdisciplinary exploitation serves as the critical part for our electric and electronics world as well as any other fields to find new way of being.
But the power of knowledge collaboration is certainly not restricted to science and engineering; it is in the full community of learning. Walking around campus I absorbed a reality that there is a seamless web between students from different professional backgrounds. The engineering students are discussing animatedly in a philosophy lecture, speaking passionately in the public speaking club, and looking for sparkling ideas from learning history and arts. How wonderful that is! That, ladies and gentleman, is just a significant step forward to be well-rounded because once we jump out of the circle we can see the bigger picture.
My friends, I hope that you have already got what university is all about. Please let me end my speech with the Nobel Prize winner Li Zhengdao’s words: “The realization of the perfect combination of science and engineering, science and arts, technology and humanity，is the greatest symbol of a university’s success.” Thank you.
