“否定”的翻譯 （3）
這篇我們繼續(xù)探討不用否定詞表否定的方法(即形式上肯定,意義上否定),例句來源于網(wǎng)絡(luò),童鞋們也可以自己造,印象更深刻~
3,but 類
① but for+名詞和but that+從句(譯為”要不是,如果沒有”)
如: But for the rain we should have had a pleasant journey.
要不是下雨,我們會(huì)有一次愉快的旅行.(記得要用虛擬語氣~)
But for your help,I should have failed.或But that you help me,I should have failed.
要不是你幫助,我就會(huì)失敗。
②Anything but
Anything 等復(fù)合代詞或復(fù)合副詞加but,通常表否定之意。
如:I will be anything but quiet on Saturday night!
星期六的晚上我根本靜不下心來!
4,from和 of類
①Far from(遠(yuǎn)非,非但)
Far from being relaxed, we both felt so uncomfortable we hardly spoke.
我們兩人非但沒有放松,反而都感覺很不自在,幾乎沒有說話。
②So far from(非但不…反而)
So far from admitting his own mistake, he falsely accused his critic.
他非但不認(rèn)錯(cuò), 還倒打一耙.
③So far be it from me(我決不愿…)
Far be it from me to betray a friendship I hold so sacred.
我決不愿欺騙我認(rèn)為神圣的友誼.
④Instead of
Instead of complaining about what's wrong, be grateful for what's right.
別抱怨不好的事,要對(duì)好的事心存感恩。
⑤Free from(沒有…的,不受…影響的)
He is free from prejudice to everybody.
他對(duì)所有的人都不帶有任何成見.
5 ,介詞
一些介詞表抽象概念時(shí),也可譯為否定。
①Above,表能力品質(zhì)超出某種范圍
②Below /beneath(與…不相稱,不值得)
③Beyond(表示不可能;為…所不及;)
④Under(未達(dá)到,未滿足)
⑤Within(不超過,不出)
如: He's above suspicion (= He is completely trusted) .
他無可置疑。
He considers such jobs beneath him.
他覺得這種工作有失他的身份。(即”和他的身份不相稱”)
The situation is beyond our control.
我們已無法控制這一局面。
Nobody under 18 is allowed to buy alcohol.
未滿18歲者不得買酒。
a house within a mile of the station
離車站不到一英里的一所房子
6,the last(最不…的)
He would be the last person who would do such a thing.
他最不可能干這種事情。
以上我們總結(jié)了一些形式上肯定但意思上否定的表達(dá),但英語中還有一類詞,雖然形式上是否定的,在意義上卻是肯定的,比如以下句子:
1,We cannot too strongly urge upon you the importance of this matter.
對(duì)此事,我們無論怎樣向你強(qiáng)調(diào)其重要性都不會(huì)過分.
(cannot …too/can never…too/can hardly…too通常譯為”再…也不為過”) :這一結(jié)構(gòu)的實(shí)質(zhì)是:過分否定,導(dǎo)致肯定。因而此結(jié)構(gòu)中的can’t可改用impossible,not可采用其變體never,hardly等,因此上句也可改寫為
We are impossible too strongly urge upon you the importance of this matter.
2, I can never thank you enough for your generosity.
對(duì)您的慷慨大度我永遠(yuǎn)感謝不盡.
(can never do enugh也有”在…也不為過”的意思)
3, can’t help doing表示”禁不住做某事”時(shí),也可看作是”形否意肯”
I can't help feeling sorry for the poor man.
我不禁為這個(gè)可憐的男人感到難過。
l此外,還有can’t help but… 意為”必須,只好”
When our country calls us for help, we can't help but go.
當(dāng)祖國需要我們時(shí), 我們必須盡力.
4, “ no, none, nothing + but/like”意為“只有”、“只”、“不過”等。“ nothing short of有“簡(jiǎn)直可以說”的意思。
例如:
The results are nothing short of magnificent.
結(jié)果非常不錯(cuò)。
All that money brought nothing but sadness and misery and tragedy.
那筆錢帶來的只有傷心、痛苦和悲劇。
There is nothing like jogging as a means of exercise.
鍛煉身體的最好辦法是慢跑。
None but God will ever know what I suffered.
只有上帝知道我受過什么苦。
5, no+aaj./adv.的比較級(jí)+than表示”兩個(gè)都不”(詳見”形容詞”部分)
6, 否定詞或暗含否定的詞+until/till表”直到…才”
Britain did not introduce compulsory primary education until 1880.
直到1880年,英國才開始實(shí)行初等義務(wù)教育。
7. no sooner than,hardly/scarcely?when/before表”一…就”
No sooner had I heard the knock than I opened the door.
當(dāng)我聽到敲門聲,我馬上就開門了。
. Hardly had we started when it began to rain.
我們剛出發(fā),就開始下雨了。
We had hardly started before [ when ] it began to rain.
我們剛出發(fā),就開始下雨。
以上我們談了部分否定和全部否定,雙重否定和否定轉(zhuǎn)移,以及一些特殊的”形肯意否”和”形否意肯”的表達(dá),這些大概就是否定句翻譯時(shí)的難點(diǎn)所在了 ,我們?cè)诜g實(shí)踐過程中,不僅要注重積累,更要注意用英語思維方式去理解英語,既要兼顧英語句子的語法功能,準(zhǔn)確理解句子在特定語境中的內(nèi)涵,也要考慮到漢語句子的結(jié)構(gòu)與語序,依照漢語的表達(dá)習(xí)慣來組織行文,通過對(duì)英漢兩種語言的比較與認(rèn)知,來逐步提高自己的翻譯水平。
