例如，在今天要學的第一個習慣用語里shakes就是名詞，而且根據習慣這個短語里的shake還帶有復數詞尾-s。這個習慣用語是：no great shakes。No great shakes這個習慣用語聽來意思是沒引起多大的震動。換句話說也就是平凡普通、中不溜秋的東西或者事情。
我們來聽個例子。說話的人在對朋友評論自己昨晚看的一場電影。我們聽聽他是否欣賞這部片子。
例句-1：Well, it was no great shakes. The story was mediocre and the acting was just so-so. I was bored except for that new actress - she can’t act but she’s a beautiful woman.
他說：嗯，這片子毫不出色。故事情節一般，演技也不過如此。除了里面的一位新的女明星之外，其它方面都讓我覺得膩煩。這位新星不會演戲，但她是個美女。
這里他用了習慣用語no great shakes表示這電影毫不出色、相當平庸。
我們再聽個例子。這段話在談運動，說話的人最心愛的棒球隊是波士頓的紅襪隊，只是聽來紅襪隊今年的戰績讓他很掃興。
例句-2：I thought the Red Sox had a real chance to win the World Series this year after so long without a championship. But they turned out to be no great shakes, just like last year.
他說：我原以為紅襪隊那么久沒有得過冠軍，今年一定有可能在世界職業棒球錦標賽中贏得勝利，但是他們卻和去年一樣成績平平。
這里的no great shakes意思是成績平平，并不出人頭地。聽來這個失望的球迷只能耐心地再等上一年了。
今天要學的第二個習慣用語是：shake a leg。在Shake a leg這個習慣用語里，shake顯然是個動詞，照字面意思看shake a leg就是晃動一條腿。我們聽下面的例子來捉摸習慣用語shake a leg是什么意思吧。這是大學生在叫醒早上貪睡不起的室友Bob。注意他話里的shake a leg：
例句-3：Bob! Hey, Bob, wake up! It’s already 9:30 and you’ve got that big math test at 10 o’clock. Come on, man, shake a leg! Come on, - you’ve got to get moving right now!
他使勁叫醒Bob，因為已經到九點半了，而Bob十點有數學大測驗。時間緊迫，所以他要Bob必須立刻行動起來。
顯然他說shake a leg，是催促Bob趕快行動。這就是這個習慣用語的意思。
再聽個例子。說話的人正焦灼不安地在房間里來回踱步，又一而再、再而三地看手表，他終于按捺不住，對在里屋磨蹭個沒完沒了的太太發話了，注意他話里也用了shake a leg：
例句-4：Honey, we’d better shake a leg. The wedding is at eleven and it takes an hour to drive there. It’s already 10:15 so we better get moving because we’re already late!

這段話里的習慣用語shake a leg意思顯然也是趕快行動，可見shake a leg是用來催促旁人加快行動的。它是非正式的語言，常用在家人和老朋友之間。
